This has been one of my favourite projects to date. Creating my own children’s wear brand ‘Youth Apparel’ for this project pushed me to take pride in every element from research to final outcome. I used survey monkey to gather research in to the children’s wear sector. The survey was an extremely successful example of primary research. I received over 100 responses after posting it to pages such as ‘Net Mums’ and ‘Mums in Durham’. My development boards, inspired by labyrinth of collages (see below) were carefully considered and my Prezi presentation for the brand concept was well rehearsed. My passion for the brand was evident through my preparation and level of quality for the project. For the final outcome I had to create 3 examples of branding. I focused on a logo, bag, freebies and hanger. I made the logo, patterns and designs all from scratch. College resources such as the laser cutter and vinyl cutter helped me create professional branding samples. I also sourced a lot of the products myself. I included samples of unsuccessful branding such as handmade sweet wrappers. My chosen final outcomes were strong, bold and fitting with the brand. I was graded 82% Distinction. Positive feedback I received was ‘excellent level of product management’ ‘outstanding professional Prezi and my final outcome could ‘sit comfortably in an industry setting’. My areas for development were to include further research and experiment further with materials and resources. I learnt a wide variety of research methods, presentation methods and how to use new college resources during this project. For my next project I will cover more areas of research using more than one method in hope to lift my grade. I am extremely proud of this project. I would consider doing a similar project for my final negotiated brief. |

There was some outstanding work pulled together for the Fashion Retail and Enterprise open evening. Not only was it an opportunity to show the work from my year group but to view the work (competition :P) from the level 4 students. My favourite was a fashion illustration project from a girl in level 4! The display as a whole caught my eye. A strong colour story and theme through out. Her ideas were so clever. A very inspiring project!
What a way to end for Christmas!
Last night, Newcastle College held an opening night to showcase our Visual Merchandising Exhibition. A chance for parents and people from the industry to come and view the project we had been working on for the past 3 weeks. The display was also the deadline of the project. Each individual installation had to be complete for the night so that the gallery came together to look like a department store of concession shops. After a stressful day off pulling the last of my work together (putting up a PVC backdrop was a last minute decision) I managed to finish my installation in time. I found this project difficult at first to imagine new ideas. I like to think outside the box, so something that was unoriginal would not be good enough. Once I got the ball rolling, I loved the creative aspects. It is safe to say I was thrilled with my final show space looked. It was bold, creative and unusual. Most of all, it was reflective of rebellious children’s clothing brand I was trying to create. I received excellent feedback from peers, lectures and the industry. Not only was I thrilled to see my own final product, I got too preview what my peers had achieved. I took photos of my favourite parts of the show. I love @Robsoart who I found on Instagram. A fashion illustrator who uses only graphic design. My strengths lie within graphics and I would love to try and create my own graphic fashion illustration.
When I developed the mood boards for Youth Apparels branding I used this image to reflect how I would use an unusual style hanger. I loved the minimalistic design of this one especially. I thought it would work really well in the Youth Apparel brand. It would have cost too much to purchase the hanger to use in my final Visual Merchandising display. Instead, in the spare time I had gained during this project, I took full advantage of the college laser cutter. I used the same idea of a triangle hanger and recreated my own similar design on Adobe Illustrator. The end result was surprisingly great and professional! I think they would work well in my boutique store. Had I had longer to develop this branding sample, I would have tried different coloured plastic (glowing yellow and white). I would have loved to etch the brand logo on the hanger make it fully Youth Apparel.
